Made A Curse For Us

Some of the most glorious truths in the Bible are that Jesus willingly accepted the full wages of our sin, yet was raised from the dead and is alive forever and prays for us.

Romans 6:23: For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Galatians 3:13: Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

Romans 5:6: For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

2 Corinthians 5:21: For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Mark 15:28: And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.

Acts 2:22: Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: 23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: 24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.

Hebrews 7:25: Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

Several commentaries explain what Jesus did for us far better than I can.

British Family Bible on Jesus:

being made a curse for us: Christ was *made a curse* in the same manner that He was *made sin for us,* not by contracting the guilt, but by suffering the punishment, of our sins; by being *numbered with the transgressors,* and condemned with them to the death.

Spurgeon Devotional Commentary:

His the curse, that ours might be the blessing. By the gate of substitution all blessings come to us, and even that best of blessings, the Holy Spirit.

People*s New Testament Commentary:

He took our curse on himself and suffered in our stead.

William Burkitt New Testament Commentary:

The way and manner in and by which Jesus Christ effecteth all this for us; namely, by his being made a curse for us; not that Christ was made the very curse itself, or changed into a curse, but he took the curse upon himself, our sin became his by voluntary susception of the punishment; and Christ underwent that death, the death of the cross, which by the law was accursed, to free us from the curse of the law; as Christ was made sin for us, so was he made a curse for us. Now as he was made sin, not by contracting the guilt of sin, but by suffering the punishment of sin; so he was made a curse, by undergoing that death.
